How do you manage building a balboa scene within local dance politics?

Having mostly started dancing in Columbus, Ohio, Chicago was a big change. It was a relatively large swing dance scene with plenty of local politics. I would suggest trying to work within the established scene if possible. Sometimes, it is possible to improve the climate of the local scene from within. However, if this becomes difficult, you may need to start your own events. Remember that people come to swing dance for many reasons and having a variety of community events is not a bad thing. Be positive and professional. Try not to get involved in unnecessary politics in possible. The balboa community is small and must be as friendly and inclusive as possible.
